Eukarya Art Collective = Artistic Body
Eukarya was an artistic collective that operated in the locality of Quito, Ecuador, from the year 2017 to 2021. Our primary focus was the creation and research of artworks within the framework of contemporary art. We constituted a collaborative platform that amplified local artistic production through curatorial support and exhibition setup advisory. We were interested in generating autonomous and transitory exhibition spaces aimed at the visibility and dissemination of multidisciplinary knowledge, where the possibility of encounter and content generation existed. Despite Eukarya being an artistic body that carried out its activities in independent art scenes, we were open to forming institutional bonds in order to provide tools to strengthen emerging artistic processes. Our intention was to expand our sphere of influence both through institutional support and our own means, as well as to extend our work into different national and international geographical areas.
Eukarya = Cuerpo Artístico
Eukarya es un cuerpo artístico que se desarrolló en la localidad de Quito-Ecuador desde el año 2017 hasta el año 2021. Nuestro enfoque principal fue la creación e investigación de obras, en el marco del arte contemporáneo. Formamos una plataforma colaborativa que expandía la producción artística local, a través del acompañamiento curatorial y asesoría de montaje de exhibiciones. Nos interesaba generar espacios de exposición autónomos y transitorios orientados a la visibilización y divulgación de conocimiento multidisciplinario, donde exista la posibilidad de encuentro y generación de contenido. A pesar de que Eukarya fue un cuerpo artístico que desplegaba sus actividades en espacios de la escena independiente, estuvimos abiertos a formar lazos institucionales con el fin de proporcionar herramientas para reforzar los procesos artísticos emergentes. Nuestra intención fue expandir nuestro campo de acción tanto a través del impulso de la institución, como desde nuestros propios medios. Así como, extender nuestro trabajo en distintas áreas geográficas nacionales e internacionales.
SWAP: Exchange Encounter and Installation - 11th November 2017 - The Dome (Pestalozzi Foundation)
Eukarya Periferia, in collaboration with the group Paper Dolls, invites you to participate in the creation of an aesthetic and social space centered around clothing exchange. The setting for this gathering is The Dome of the Pestalozzi Foundation, where an artistic installation will be set up featuring the clothing to be exchanged. We aim to subvert the way clothing is typically acquired in everyday life, proposing a shift in the sense of ownership of garments. Through interaction and connection with others, there is a displacement from the traditional spaces of buying and selling clothing to the exhibition space. This exchange will occur in a barter format, creating a dynamic experience. It will explore different perceptions of identity in relation to the construction of clothing. Our purpose is to move beyond conventional forms of acquiring clothing and, through the social gathering of individuals, construct a relational installation.
SWAP: Encuentro de intercambio e instalación - 11 de noviembre de 2017 - EL Domo (Fundación Pestalozzi)
Eukarya Periferia en conjunto con el grupo Paper Dolls, los invitan a compartir la creación de un espacio estético y social en torno al intercambio de ropa. El marco que acoge el encuentro es El Domo de la Fundación Pestalozzi, allí se montará una instalación artística con la ropa que va a ser intercambiada. Buscamos subvertir la forma en la que se adquiere ropa en la cotidianidad. Proponemos una ruptura en la relación de pertenencia con las prendas. Con el encuentro y la relación con los otros, se produce una dislocación de los sitios tradicionales de compra/venta de vestimenta para localizarse en el espacio de exhibición. Este intercambio se dará a modalidad de trueque generando una experiencia dinámica. La misma que explorará las diferentes percepciones de identidad en torno a la construcción de vestimenta. Nuestro propósito es ir más allá de las formas convencionales de adquirir ropa, y construir a través del conjunto social de personas reunidas una instalación relacional.

SWAP II: Social Fabrics - 10th October 2018 - Contemporary Art Centre of Quito
This work aims to subvert the way clothing is acquired in contemporary daily life, through relational aesthetics and the exchange of second-hand clothing. SWAP is a space where garments considered waste in the buying and selling system find new bodies to clothe and resist disappearance. These pieces, not being acquired in the commercial sector, propose a network of mutual support, as extending the use of clothing prompts a reevaluation of the timelines behind the textile industry procedures. The perception and the way we relate to the ritual of dressing also define the social fabrics to which we have adapted. By defining the value of beauty in what is novel, it is overlooked that there is also merit in what was forgotten and could still be relevant. Exchanging clothes with other women creates both a prior and new memory; it is a powerful way to combine our own experiences and forge common bonds.
SWAP II: Tejidos sociales - 10 de octubre de 2018 - Centro de Arte Contemporáneo de Quito
La segunda edición del SWAP propone desde la estética relacional, cambiar la forma en la que se adquiere ropa en la cotidianidad, dentro de una arquitectura de relaciones y adquisición de vestimenta no convencional. La instalación-intercambio muestra como sus piezas poseen un atractivo añadido por la historia que conlleva cada vestimenta tramada. En esta obra las prendas van cambiando a medida que encuentran nuevos cuerpos para vestir y resistir en el acto. La percepción y la manera de relacionarnos con el ritual de vestir, definen también los tejidos sociales a los que nos hemos acoplado. Intercambiar ropa con otros participantes genera una memoria previa y nueva, es una manera poderosa de combinar vivencias propias trazando lazos comunes.
